Dream Shards and Frozen Orbs After 3.0.8

I’m pleased to introduce our very first Guest Poster -> Markco from Just My Two Copper.  His blog is focused on the WoW economy and he shares his tips for making gold in WoW.  I’ve popped over to his blog a few times and I’ve enjoyed getting his insights on the economic tides of the game as various changes are implemented by Blizzard. He was also recently featured on Tobold’s MMORPG Blog, so he’s shaping up to be an active participant in the WoW blogging family.

Markco has offered to write a post with his thoughts on the best way to capitalize on the Dual-Spec feature that many of us believe is right around the corner (I vote next patch!).  I’m sure this is something that most Scribes are thinking about, I know I’m looking for ways to revive my recent sad efforts with Inscription.  So without further ado, here’s his analysis:

“How to prepare for 3.1 Dual Specs – by Markco

Hello everyone! This is my first guest post on Kaliope’s blog and I want to show you all how to prepare for when the much anticipated dual spec patch goes live. I am the owner, operator, and daily poster for Just My Two Copper and I bring a 10-year game designer’s look at how to make gold in world of warcraft. Armed with my knowledge, I guarantee you will make thousands of gold on patch day. Let’s get started…

I. Preparation for Patch Day

Complete the Daily Northrend Inscription Quest every day.

Same goes for the lesser inscription for obtaining minors. You will know that you can stop doing the daily when you begin to generate duplicate inscriptions already present in your inscription book. Keep in mind that snowfall inks can be purchased for ten inks of the sea and any other ink can be traded for with a single ink of the sea. This means that the best way to prepare for the dual spec patch is to stockpile inks of the sea before trading them in and making the specific glyphs you will need.

My strategy the first time around was to look at every single glyph on the auction house to see if it was there. I printed out a list of all of them so that I could type the glyphs instead of having to search through the clumsy auction house search tool. Here are all the glyphs so that you can print them out for patch day. I would also advise making 2 of every glyph, even ones that will not be selling well, just so that you can catch people trying out random glyphs on their character. Dual specs will be a day of experimentation, so it is wise to have every glyph posted for selling to the curious buyers on your server.

(MINORS) Battle, Bloodrage, Charge, Thunderclap, Mocking blow, Enduring Victory.

Quick Tip: When reading this list understand that the most popular selling glyphs are going to flip flop. Why is this? Well let’s say 90% of warriors are prot (completely wrong but just pretend), why would they purchase prot glyphs? They are going to want a dps set of glyphs instead. Classes that are primary tanks (druids, warriors, paladins, and dk’s) are going to want dps sets. Another example might be priests. Very few priests right now are shadow making it likely that shadow glyphs are going to sell the best on patch day. Keep this in mind when pre-stockpiling for patch day.

II. Patch Day practices: A study on how I made 20k gold the first time Inscription came out and how you can learn from my experiences for this time around.

Step 1: First off I was stockpiling herbs last time, this time you will be stockpiling inks of the sea. To be exact, I had 5800 herbs ready for patch day to help me level and then allow me to make whatever glyphs I wanted. Thanks to inks of the sea being trade-able this is going to be down right easy. I have an entire bank tab of the inks ready this time around (98 x 20 = 1960 inks), along with another two bank tabs of pre-made glyphs.

Step 2: Do not pigeon hole yourself into any one class’s glyphs; I posted on an alt character initially with two of every single glyph for ridiculous prices. Some of these actually sold, but I don’t see this happening on the next patch day, you’re going to need to outsmart your probably prepared opponents this time around. Within minutes of my alt posting, dozens of greedy auctioneers undercut me with sometimes twenty or more glyphs for around 50% of an undercut. I then swooped in as soon as all my initial posting was done (this took a good hour) and undercut everyone else with two glyphs of every type on my main character. You should try a similar approach and look for deals. People are going to be stupid enough to post glyphs for the prices that they have been going for pre-patch. If you have a glyph up for twenty gold and someone undercuts you with three for two gold each, do you know the best move? You definitely shouldn’t undercut them, instead, buy them out and repost because if only one sells you still make a huge profit. Repeat this process for thirty glyphs and the money is substantial. Remember that people are going to WANT TO BUY YOUR GLYPHS and it is going to be extremely difficult for auctioneers to keep up with demand. Imagine if every person on the server purchased blue gems, how about six blue gems to be exact, on the SAME DAY. That is what inscription is going to be like. Oh, and most people have alts as well; this kind of demand will make for insane profits.

Step 3: Over the course of 48 hours I checked the auction house every chance I had (I also worked 16 hours and slept probably 12 in that time so I wasn’t glued to the screen). A good goal is to check the auction house once every two hours to see which glyphs sold and need to be replaced. It is quite possible that nearly all your glyphs will be gone and reposting them will be a real pain. I would advise using auctioneer to post your items but do not allow it to decide the price automatically as it will be using previous market estimates. Remember not to post more than two or three of any glyph because otherwise you will invite undercutting. If people see one glyph under their six glyphs they will just wait it out and let yours sell or possibly buy yours to repost it. Keeping as few glyphs as possible on the auction house is a winning strategy on patch day. I know because it allowed me to accumulate twenty thousand gold in two days from selling glyphs alone. The trick is to always be posting just a few glyphs each time yours are purchased. In the end supply stays very low and price stays wonderfully high.

Step 4: Have a minimum profit you wish to make.

Know how low you are willing to move on selling the glyphs. Every single glyph is now worth the same in terms of profit because they are mostly coming from inks of the sea. If glyphs become flooded in any one area, still continue to post one or two at the minimum profit you wish to make. Just make sure that you are always raking in a profit. Things are going to get hairy on patch day and you are going to need to know your limits as there will be plenty of buyers for other glyphs at any one time.

III. Using Trade Chat Correctly on Patch Day

Do not post individual glyphs in trade. Do not post spell books in trade. Rather, you should be posting something similar to this:

“ALL Northrend and Azeroth Glyphs for sale, PST for inscription book”

This kind of advertising does two things. First, it draws attention to the reader at the word “ALL” as well as “PST for inscription book.” Mentally, a reader will stop looking at all other posts on the trade channel in order to whisper you for your inscription book. Once they have whispered you, you should immediately respond with your spell-book and have a prearranged location to sell your glyphs. My suggestion is to sit at the mailbox in the Drag, which is right next to where you can apply glyphs in the first place. This marketing strategy should greatly increase your glyph sales while waiting for the auction house to work its magic. Keep in mind that I only sold around fifty glyphs with this method and well over seven hundred via the auction house. Therefore, it is better to fully stock the auction house then waste time in trade chat when you’re items are selling. Create a ‘whispers tab’ that only contains whispers in order to help keep track of your buyers’ conversations with you.

Hopefully this will help you make the maximum amount of profit on patch day and the following week. Thank you Kaliope for allowing me to guest post on your blog! This place is a great resource for wow players and I look forward to posting again.

Thanks and good luck,

— Markco –
